Lately my daughter Lil’ P and I have been going to the beach first thing in the morning. Today we were greeted by some good-ole Flagler shore pound, which made a swim a little bit tricky. We were content to sit in the sand and let the waves wash over us as sand made it’s way into all possible crevices. This immediately reminded me of the dreaded “pocket” in the bottom of all my bathing suits. An unfinished lining that would collect everything swimming in the sea and cause you to feel as though you had a giant sandbag in your pants. Those were the days- Cheers.

In a few hours I will be getting myself and the family ready to cruise up town and attend our monthly First Friday…Music in the Park. In a few hours I will be taking a stance with the microphone in hand blindly speaking to an audience somewhere between 500-1000 people. In a few hours I will be conquering a fear and obtaining a goal.
When I was a child I was petrified by shyness. If I had to buy lunch at school I would end up sick and going home before the bell chimed and lines formed. I sometimes still find it hard to speak with people I know in public spaces and instead look at the floor or pretend to find something ridiculously interesting that all peripheral vision is impaired. Sometimes… And sometimes with my big mouth and loud voice you’d never know that I was shy for a minute.
The irony is that I had a dream when I was younger to be a stand-up comedian and could never figure out how I would ever get myself in front of people without peeing on myself. Unless of course that was the joke of my show.
But here I am hours before doing something I never deemed possible…
I’m not very funny but at least I haven’t peed. Cheers-

Congrats and Cheers!

On the way home last night from Publix (no major disasters there except for an irate elderly women) I professed the desire to drive A1A for an ocean view. To my great surprise I saw a swell in the water…sorry to disappoint you folks but I pay no attention to forecasts…that’s what my neighbor Warren is for…Getting home I felt it was my duty to actually go for a surf and I did. The funny part of this story is what my surf session actually consists of when I say “I went surfing:)”

First my excuses. I have a two year old so the amount of surf time I get equals to the amount of “me time.” Also I really dislike cold water, wind, wind chop and I am just getting older…meaning particular about what I am paddling into. So basically I am out of shape which is further embellished by the fact that I had to squeeze into my 5 year old stretched out bathing suit. And apparently I wear a rash guard not for sun protection but to keep the mammaries in place and the belly from falling out. So not only am I super hot and sexy but I am panting and begging for air as I struggle to get through the never ending impact zone. But I made it. And then I sat. And then a set came through and I had to start panting and begging for air again as my arms burned from terrible misuse of being flung about and forced to portray wooden oars.

The crazy part as I began to notice numbness in my fingers is how grateful I was to be out in the water, even if I was just bobbing around. After a few attempts and near over the falls moment I finally did catch a wave. It may have even looked like I knew what I was doing. Most important however was the smile smeared across my red face. I can’t wait til next time! Cheers-

Flagler County is celebrating Spring Break this week as hundreds of kids and families have been cruising around town, basking in Mother Nature’s best weather yet this season. The ocean brought out it’s aces as it complimented the sky with dazzling blue green colors reflecting off the sandy bottom of our crystal clear waters. And then as if it couldn’t get any better the swell has been steady building all week to a glassy perfection…

What a life…especially if you are kiddo and found yourself enrolled at North Beach Surf Adventures Spring Break Camp. Deal Breaker.

About 24 kids spent their four day s experiencing killer surf instruction, down time in the concrete skate zone, lazy afternoons paddling kayaks and SUP boards through an eco tour and to top it off a visit with Park Ranger Brian and his reptile friends.

To end the week they were given a chance to show their skills in a surf contest, some competing for the first time ever.

I had the opportunity to speak with a few of the campers to see what they really thought about their spring break experience.

14 year old first time camper Collin Mclellan said that “everything” was his favorite part of camp, despite the fact that he had a bandaged up leg from a serious game of catch on the beach.

Veteran Kelsea Mc Cormick said that surfing has opened her eyes to the desire of travel. At the age of 8 it has also given her self confidence and amped up her willingness to do well in school.

Kai Jackson who was a first time competitor said her nerves helped her push through the pressure and she ended up unknowingly winning her heat. “I kept hearing them announce names and thought oh no, my brother is gonna make fun of me. When they got to the last one I wasn’t even paying attention cause I never thought I would have won.” Kai ended up placing 5th overall in the beginners division.

Total fun had by all as they wrap up a week of life changing adventures and experiences. But never fear Summer Sessions are on the horizon. So make your plans to settle on the beach and send the kids off to surf camp or maybe you can join in the fun. Sign up here… Cheers!

Beginners Division:

1st Robbie Goodwin, 2nd Kiah Hutcherson, 3rd Korbyn Tietjen, 4th Carl Burger, 5th Kai Jackson, 6th Jayden Jackson

Open Division:

1st Brayden Bryant, 2nd Shawn Arthur, 3rd Sky Blumenfeld, 4th Tom Burger, 5th Kelsea McCormick, 6th Hannah Blevins

As the story goes the four member band: TJ Jarosik Vocals/Guitar, Chris Dixon Banjo, Mike Juliano Vocals/Guitar, and Josh Salestrom Drums and Percussion were figuring out the best way to get the most paid gigs. Unfortunately for the musicians this ends up being a set comprised of cover songs. While not wanting to walk this road of un-originality they decided to spin their talents by taking the iconic songs of the 80’s and putting a folk spin on em, resulting in a toe tapping, knee slapping good time.

Folkin up the 80’s isn’t their only talent as these guys are true musicians and have an original band called Pilotwave to showcase their authentic selves. Beatle’s fans at the core they appreciate melody and can back it up with their picking skills. They are currently recording and will have a cd available soon but you can see them in person since they are quickly filling up their time cards at venues in our tri-county area. So show your love and support for some great local talent and come get Folked Up… at First Friday…Flagler Beach…April 6th.

Also on the schedule is an Easter Egg hunt for 10 and under kids at 5:15 pm

Music starts at 6:00 pm…”Shade out Melanoma” fashion show at 7:15 pm…Flashlight Egg Hunt 8:15

Dr. Bruce Paley D.O and Advance Dermatology and Cosmetic Surgery will be present to answer questions and do light screenings.

Free Hawaiian Tropic / Banana Boat sunscreen handed out by Beach 92.7 radio station

Local shops and Museum open late and loads of great family fun for everyone!!

Cheers!
