Perhaps it’s because she was blessed with two beautiful grand-babies that she has won TWO times!! Another refreshing beverage goes out to Linda Morgan

Finally after a couple weeks it was discovered that the parrot flies regularly around our awesome little coffee shop The Beachouse Beanery. My son and I used to have a wonderful Friday morning routine…we’d tour the market then go have a yummy cup of coffee and for him a muffin before school. It was always so nice to walk in and see familiar faces…all inquiring about my son’s progress in his life journey. Truly it is a warm and fuzzy place so if you never have been put it on your list..otherwise tell Carol and Jeff — Carla says Hi!

A bit of rule refresher: these pictures come from an eatery in town, the first to guess correctly receives a drink to quench the thirst, you must leave the guess in the comment space (not facebook), and if you work there–sorry for your luck you can play next time

drum roll please…………………

I started taking the below photos last summer in hopes of spotting a honey bee.
Spotted Bee Balm is now in bloom, you can see it on roadsides and disturbed areas. It tends to spread so if you want to add it to your garden be prepared to share it with friends and neighbors after it gets established and seeds. Spotted Bee Balm likes full sun, but tolerates partial shade, especially in the lower south, it is also drought tolerant. It it is very tolerant of salt spray and partial to sandy soil making it great for Flagler Beach yards.

While taking these pictures I for once was bothering the bees.

It’s funny but I don’t like to cross the bridge. I have no problem driving up A1A to either St. Augustine or Daytona but the thought of having to go inland makes me try to think of something else. When I used to have a store in town I would chat with visitors about how cool it was that almost everything you need could be found within walking distance. Unfortunately for me I have not achieved the level of organization I strive for so I find myself visiting the local grocery store several times a week but one day I have hopes that my needs will be met with a simple visit to town on my bicycle.

Sean Moylan was born in Boston but his family transitioned from a big city Irish community to sleepy Flagler Beach when he was only nine months old. I have personally known Sean since I was ten and we share a unique award. The two of us were hand selected by our fellow class members as “class clowns” in both 8th grade and 12th grade.

Sadly, I still think I’m funny while Sean is out changing the world.

Sean is among a small group of graduates from F.P.C. to attend and graduate from an Ivy League school. During his junior year at Columbia he spent a semester in Australia studying the Aboriginees and then stopped over in Fiji where he acclimated himself to their ritualized customs. He re-told his experience of having to meet the Tribal Chief saying,” When you entered his space you had to make sure your head was lower than his at all times and ask permission to stay in his region. You were also supposed to bring a gift; it was good to bring Kava.”

Finishing with a degree from Columbia, a master’s from UF, and a Juris Doctorate from Florida A&M, Sean has also managed to fit in normal life things like living in a co-op in San Francisco and teaching in one of the nation’s poorest school districts, the South Bronx. He has also shared his gift of teaching with our school system, spending time as a teacher at Indian Trails and moonlighting as a substitute until just now.

Sean was simultaneously in the process of getting his personal law practice underway and helping a fellow teacher when he witnessed a lifetime opportunity for the taking. The recently resigned Flagler County Superintendent Bill Delbrugge is leaving for Egypt to set up and educational environment for students prepping for westernized college and was inquiring about the teacher Sean had been assisting. Not in the right place the teacher passed up the offer and Sean took it. He said, “I’m lucky I had two months to prepare myself or I would have gone crazy. There’s a lot to do when you are moving to a place like Egypt.”

Yet again Sean joins a select few who will be leaving Flagler County and preparing for the career experience of a lifetime. “Education is my true passion” he said as he looks forward to advancement into administration. When I asked him my token question of whether or not he plans on returning to Flagler Beach he replied, “Home is where the heart is, my family is here, and it’s where I grew up.”

And if my two cents count…we’ll be lucky when he does.

Oh sooooo this next week’s challenge is….

And again, there’s a beverage of your choice riding on this…happy hunting! and sorry no employees may play..maybe next week:)

–and all comment must be made on the site not facebook

Not knowing who this guy is I must tell you that he may have changed this kids life forever… and that my friend’s is an awesome thing! Cheers

Another local you might see fluttering around in your garden is the Gulf fritillary.

The larvae form can be found chewing on native and nonnative species of Passiflora (host food plant).

I recently noticed the Gulf fritillary flying and landing for a second, then repeating this over and over. Taking a closer look I realized it was laying an egg each time it landed (this time it was on the Passiflora, but another one was on the block house).

Some of the favorite adult nectar sources are Tall verbena (Verbena bonariensis), pentas (Pentas lanceolata), and lantana (Lantana camara)

These photos were taken locally in pesticide free yards. Butterflies don’t like chemicals with their salad, so please keep them in mind before using pesticides in your yard.
