It’s a warm comfortable spring day on a Friday during Flagler Beach’s weekly Farmer’s Market. There is a new Music Shop open on this day with a huge sign that says MUSIC LESSONS. At first glance, it looks as if another businessman has come into Flagler beach trying to make a buck. But there’s more to the owner of Mason Music than meets the eye.

Jimmy Mason, a local musician and self proclaimed entrepreneur, grew up in Flagler Beach. His first apartment was on South 3rd street. He surfed at the Flagler Pier and worked in many restaurants along A1A in Flagler Beach. “I always intended on having a music career, I just didn’t know how I was going to pursue it.” With countless hours of practice on multiple instruments and a numerous local gig resume, you could say Jimmy Mason is a professional musician.

As a cook, waiter, and food runner it wasn’t too easy for Jimmy to find time off for gigs back then. On Saturday April 25th of 2004 this all changed. Mr Mason was involved in a head on collision while he was driving North on Old Kings Road . His left arm was broken in two places, his right foot was crushed, and his left leg was broken upon impact. “This event changed the course of my life.” He endured countless surgeries and was in a wheelchair for a year. Unable to return to the work he had once done, Jimmy had to find a different way to support his family. He had always given music lessons and taught many friends and family members. While he was recovering, He ran an ad in a popular local newspaper and found his first new student. Word of mouth spread and after about a year he had about 8 students. During this time he contemplated going back to college to pursue a career in music. “I enrolled into the Music and Sound Technology program at Valencia Community College and commuted there for 2 and a half years while also teaching students from Orlando, Daytona, and Palm Coast.” While in college his favorite class was Music Business. By the time Jimmy finished college he had about 11 students in Flagler County and worked for a Music school in Orlando teaching another 10 students. This was when he would get calls about lessons and have to refuse possible clients. “This led my wife Danielle and me to open a Music Shop and school here in Flagler beach, the town we love.”

So far it has been a successful venture. With 50 students currently on the schedule and 6 instructors available for various days and times I have to say we’re just getting started! I feel fortunate to be able to use my passion for music to inspire students and be part of the local community.”

Mason Music offers a variety of lessons in Electric Guitar, Acoustic Guitar, Bass Guitar, Drums, Piano, Clarinet, Saxophone, Flute, Trumpet, Trombone, Baritone, and Voice in Palm Coast, Flagler Beach, and Flagler County.
