“The continual scratching of the surface to find what’s beneath is one of my primary driving forces as a filmmaker. I approach every project from an original angle – there is no set formula. I always ask myself ‘how far am I willing to go’ in my attempt to tell stories without borders.” – Matt Katsolis

ABOUT THE FILM
Surfing continues to attract top film-making talent and some of the best cinematographers in the profession. Since the origins of the genre in the early 1960’s, surf films have taken many forms from documentaries to loose, experimental ramblings and from innovative “road” movies to spectacular pieces of cinematic art. The Southeast Museum of Photography is pleased to have surf filmmaker, Matt Katsolis present the Great Lakes surf documentary Red Bull – NEW WAVE.
Red Bull’s NEW WAVE documents professional big-wave surfer Jamie Sterling’s search for uncharted waves along the rugged coastline of the Great Lakes. Utilizing the Red Bull Albatross Seaplane, their explorations begin with examining the possibility that some of the world’s best waves could exist in the least likely of places.
The voyage begins in the fall as the crew tirelessly explores the coastline in search of undiscovered reefs and points, that as the winter approaches could potentially produce undiscovered big waves. As season’s shift, they return to an artic-like tundra, where the freezing water and below zero air temperatures prove to be unforgiving, yet the conditions yield waves that have never been documented or ridden.

Surfing on the Great Lakes |
|
“I never knew the Great Lakes had waves. After flying 25.2hrs, and 3,528 nautical miles I’ve come to the conclusion that the midwest has some nice setups for surfing. Some of the setups out on the vast Lakes looked like Tahitian reef passes. No the waves were not tubing like Teahupo’o but the water was crystal clear and the waves were rolling in with uniformity.
We did plenty of searching and scored a little out of season swell that I stand up paddled. The locals greeted us with open arms and welcomed us back anytime. The private flights on the Red Bull Albatross were mind blowing. Talk about a high end adventure.” – Aloha, Jamie Sterling
