When a new business opens up in town something about it usually catches your eye…for me this time it was the pretty potted flowers welcoming you at the door. Down to Earth Pottery’s doors have been wide open since December 1^st, 2012 and things are just starting to get fired up.

The owner Heather Wales has over 25 years of experience playing with clay.  She started with pottery studios in New Jersey, then moved on to New Mexico and now is happy to call Flagler home where she fulfills a dream of having a “studio with a view of the sea and living in a community open to the arts.”  Heather is a graduate from the Art Institute of Ft. Lauderdale and is passionate about sharing her knowledge with students of all ages.

When I popped in there were two lovely ladies creating some of their own pottery magic.  Peg Kalush a second time class member was in the process of creating another fabulous dish for her husband to enjoy his meals out of.  Her friend Kathleen Masley from Debary was experiencing her mastery of clay for the first time and being quite creative with a two toned glazing process.  She confided that her greeting card business KM Kards is where she first realized that she did have creative bones.  Both ladies stated that working with the clay was a wonderful mind and body experience.

 Heather states that no experience is necessary and offers classes on wheel thrown or hand building on all levels.  She is also available for parties (you can customize your own), caters to Boy Scouts & Girl Scouts (they earn a badge!), will be holding summer programs for the kiddos, and many more options for people who want to get their hands on some clay.
