In my most recent post Please don’t make me cross the Bridge, I made a quick statement of how I’m not a large fan of driving around or crossing over the Intracoastal Waterway. However, traveling down A1A with majestic ocean views on my right, while further down the road you become encompassed by a thick hammock of oak trees is a completely different road trip. You see there are some very special places tucked away in The Hammock and if you are driving too quick, you’ll never know you passed them. One of these gems is Captain’s BBQ. As I’ve stated before I am not a food critic but I do really enjoy going out for a meal. However, a successful dining experience can be as much about the location, the service and then of course what goes into my belly. If you never been to Captain’s it scores Aces on all three…if you have, then you know.
The first bonus is you can arrive by watercraft (they are also a bait store so if you need something- they are the only place on the river in Flagler County) and Bings Landing offers many spaces for you to tie up (however the weekend can get very busy.) The second detail is the authentic Florida ambiance of towering oaks covering the entire property complete with dripping spanish moss and loads of air plants sprouting all about like mushrooms. These oaks provide ample shade for folks who want to sit outside and watch their kiddos play on the nearby playground or mosy about the preserved ruins of the Male Compra Plantation. Captain’s BBQ does have inside seating as well as a large screened porch, which is fabulous because this is Florida and that means bugs. The restaurant sits overlooking Bings Landing and endless views of water and wetlands.
And then of course the minor detail of their awesome food. It’s delicious! At this point I’m going to reveal that I have only eaten the smoked pork tacos and love them so much I don’t even want to try anything else. But I’m sure everything else on the menu is the same rate of awesome, even their desserts are delectable as the co-owner Mike is a cheesecake wizard. But you don’t have to take my word for it, just have a quick look at some of their Facebook reviews or perhaps the fact that they were voted in the top 10 for Trip Advisors BBQ joints across the US!!
